Albany Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Can I Kill Rats with Baking Soda?

Many people have rats in their home at some point. In most instances, it is a solitary rat that has wandered in and made itself at home. In other cases, you might be stuck with an infestation of rats. Neither of these is ideal, but the first option is preferable. It is much easier to get rid of one rat than to get rid of a colony.

Getting rid of rats
In order to keep your home free of rats, it is advisable to close all openings that they can use to gain entry to your home. These openings can be much smaller than you imagine. Rats can get in through openings that are a cm in diameter. This will greatly depend on the size of the rats in our area. You should also remove any traces of food that may attract them. Make sure you clean up your kitchen after every use. Even crumbs that are on your countertop will serve to attract these critters if they are hungry enough.

You can install a one-way exclusion funnel to the opening that the rat is using. This will allow it to leave but will close off the opening keeping it from coming back inside. An electric rat-trap is much more efficient than poison. It will kill the rat immediately, and you simply have to tip the rat into the garbage. It is always advisable that you do not touch the rat with your bare hands.

Baking soda
There is a multitude of recipes out there for baking soda rat poison. The truth is, that the most difficult part is getting the rat to ingest enough baking soda to kill it. Half a teaspoon of baking soda will kill an average-sized rat. You will need to mix it with something that the rat wants to eat. No rat is going to stand and eat 3g of baking soda.
• You can try to mix the ½ a cup of baking soda with ½ a cup of sugar. Place the mixture in a food processor and pulse until they are well mixed. Place saucers of the mixture in the areas where the rats have been running. You should be able to identify these areas by the oily, black smudges low down on the walls.
• You can also mix the baking soda with peanut butter. The taste should disguise the taste of the poison. Mix the baking soda and peanut and roll it into balls. Then place them around the area where the rats are running.

Better ideas
Poisoning a rat should never be the answer. They might be annoying and can even be destructive, but that is no reason to make them suffer. It is more humane to prevent them from entering your home in the first place. If you have an infestation of rats and cannot get rid of them on your own, a professional will come and assist you.
